Re: No more offside?
WCO, I'm not entirely sure what the icing rule was brought in for, was it to stop teams protecting a lead?

Re: No more offside?
I'd like to see "not interfering with play" scrapped for anyone in the penalty area as a minimum...if you're there or there abouts you're a defensive consideration which means you are interfering.

The current rule means in reality ,"not attempting to kick the ball"...which is insane....especially when a man on the corner flag can play you onside.

Re: No more offside?
My problem with that is, it prefers one style of football to another. I don't care about hoof-and-run, it's up to the other side to find a way to find a better style.

Though thinking out loud, "attacking" football was encouraged with the change of 3 points from 2 for a win, and with no pass-backs to the keeper, both of which I think are good ideas.

So maybe there is some merit to icing.

Re: No more offside?
I think offside needs to be looked because you can be flagged offside in your own half of the pitch. This leads to criticism of referees from fans etc...This comes from the player not being given offside if they are not gaining an advantage or interfering with play or an opponent - which makes sense. However in the scenario where a player who starts in an offside position comes back into their own half to receive the ball has gained an advantage and the indirect free kick is given where the offence took place which is in the the strikers own half. If that happened down the park on Saturday/Sunday the amount of abuse you would get...

Oi...FIFA...

...Stop fucking about with OUR game...

Stick to Organising the World Cup...and creaming off Billions...

Instant Video Refs for dodgy decisions is the only improvement needed...

Re: No more offside?
How about no offside at the 25 yard line, and 10 minute sin bins? Yellow cards for snidey/professional fouls are a waste of time.

The only problem with a sin bin is a poorly timed accidental tackle will reduce tackling even more if it's worth a yellow card.

Re: No more offside?
WCO, not exactly like hockey but something along the lines of not being able to hoof it upfield, to promote more playing and passing on the floor, but that might mean maybe introducing a new line on the field between the goal area and halfway line

Re: No more offside?
The trouble with this is that FIFA have paid a famous ex-player a shed load of money to come up with ideas on how to improve football, and lo and behold, to justify his wedge, he comes up with some ideas.
The trouble is that just because he was once a great player doesn't mean he's going to come up with great ideas.

What FIFA have to realise is that they run the best and most popular sport in the world which does not need any fucking about with.

Re: No more offside?
I don't think there is anything that needs changing in the game., apart from the players diving around all over the place and the Refs thinking they are celebrities, it looks good to me.

Not being snarky here, honest

I'm sure they use to use exactly that system in the old Anglo Italian cup for a while.

Introduce a rule like icing in Ice Hockey

Cutting out offsides will be opposed by the likes of ManU for sure. They would hate the advantage they get from "inept" officials to disappear because everyone can legally do it.

0 for a draw

Fifth Column 8.03

That's the only potentially workable idea I've seen.

Perhaps we could have a comprehensive trial of it at a lower level, or simply as a project.

However... this all sounds like somebody at FIFA is desperate to dodge implementing a proper 5th / 6th Official video system to make instant decisions on contentious calls re offside, red cards, penalties etc. ie. TELLING the ref what the decision needs to be, rather than 'advising'.

If we put that in place properly, the rules are fine as they stand...

Stupid idea..

As for yellow cards, I remember when it was red for a 4th yellow. I would go back to that. And no more straight reds for petty things.

Re: No more offside?
I can only presume Van Basten is a complete idiot. I remember this being trialled before. They ended up with defenders having to stay in their own penalty areas the whole game marking goal hangers.

The Joker 8:18 Wed Jan 18
Re: No more offside?
At a push I'd go with Fifth's solution.

Van Basten's idea to scrap it altogether would completely change the game and ruin it.

stoneman 8:17 Wed Jan 18
Re: No more offside?
I was the best goal hanger at my school between 1979 - 1984.

No one could stand a foot from the goal during playtime in the same manner as me, I'd just wait there watching people running around and then I'd just touch it in.

Happy days. I could have been a professional if they hadn't had the stupid offside rule!
